Harnek Singh – Chair

I immigrated to the UK (1971)  Started working life with Bradford City Council  as a Computer Analyst Programmer. Joined Next Plc as Microsystems Manager,  steadily progressing within the corporate ranks of Next Plc, Grattan Plc and Otto Versand (Hamburg) rising to the position of “Head of Technical Infrastructure and Telecommunications”, with responsibility for a £7m annual revenue and capital budget. Playing a leading role in the planning and procurement of technical capital requirements for Marketing, Warehousing, Call Centres, Retail, and E-Commerce projects. Was appointed as the Year 2000 I.T. Escalation Manager. In 2008 left Otto to run a small business within the Direct Marketing Sector. Currently serving as the Managing Director of Distribution Business Services Limited t/a DBS Marketing.

At home, I am married with three adult children, and also taking care of my elderly father, who moved in with us after mother passed away. We are looking forward to becoming grandparents in the near future.

Brief History of Voluntary Contributions: Chair of The Asian Youth & Cultural Organisation (AYCO 2002- 2005), Qualified Football Coach with Ventnor Youth AFC, operating weekly football coaching sessions. In association with ASHT, AYCO and other Bradford based local government agencies, RAF, Army, and private sectors sponsors, conceived and organised annual Sikh Conferences from 2002 to 2008, promoting the contribution of European and British Sikhs whilst leveraging the rich history of the Sikh Gurus and Shaheeds. Encouraging the building of bridges within the Sikh Community and externally with other faiths.

From 2011 to 2015, served as an Executive Member of the Sikh Council UK, fulfilling the key roles of Asst. Administrative Secretary, Treasurer, Co-Chair of Indian Sub-Continent Committee and Chair of the Sports Committee.


Served as a founder member of and the Chair of the Trust (2013-2017), from September 2017, took on a more hands on role of the Chair of Trustees. With specific responsibilities for handling all complaints; facilities management and ICT procurement and implementation.

In this current role my person specification is as follows:

  • good admin, communication, organisational skills, keep focused on the agenda
  • make some time for KSA Leeds on a daily basis
  • specific skills such as finance, media, meetings, chairing meetings including other meeting protocols, staff management etc

Rebecca White – Vice Chair & SEN

I am delighted to have been elected as a Trustee at Khalsa Science Academy and I am committed to improving the outcomes for our children.  I work for Noctua Teaching Alliance as a Local Leader and have worked closely with the school since November 2017.

I also work as Deputy Headteacher at Beeston Primary School.  Beeston Primary School is a member of the Leodis Schools Alliance and as a member of the Alliance I am actively involved in sharing good practice and striving to achieve the best for all the children who live in Leeds.  I hope that as a trustee at Khalsa Science Academy I will be able to help shape the future of Khalsa as it grows and ensure that all children leave Khalsa as successful and happy individuals.

Palvinder Singh

Hello to all, I am delighted to be a Trustee at Khalsa Science Academy.

I am from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, married with two children, one who has just joined his local college studying a vocational programme and the other in year 6 with a passion for politics and football.  He does not get the football from me!  My partner is a teacher educator at a local university.

I have been fortunate to work in the Education sector for nearly twenty years. I began working life as a Press Officer at Bradford College quickly becoming department manager at the age of 24.  Enjoying this experience, I sought wider roles within education management and worked in a number of colleges in various roles spanning the breadth of the north of the country.

More recently, I moved from Barnsley College to Leeds City College Group as Executive Vice Principal for Growth, with the task of creating and bringing in a change programme for growth.  I am pleased to say within the first 18 months we changed a declining trend income to an increasing budget.  I now work as a Senior Leader for one of the largest College Groups in the country NCG group, with sites from Newcastle to Wales to London.

My passion is to work with people to be the best they can be, delivering purposeful education.  I am firm believer that once this happens, everything else often falls in to place.  I believe that the best organisations are those where staff are empowered, clear about targets and all travelling in the same direction.

Jatinder Singh Mehmi

For the past thirty years, I have worked within the education sector on a voluntary basis for a wide range of institutions such as specialist schools, both primary and high schools and universities. This has given me a valuable insight into the challenges and education delivery at all levels.

My passion for education is borne out by the fact that I’ve completed by fourth degree and firmly believe in continual learning in life.

My understanding of the Sikh ethos and its application is enhanced by working with interfaith organisations, a variety of communities and the public sector on societal and cultural issues.

I have been a vice chair of governors at a high school, where I was also the chair for the inclusion and curriculum committee, and am also currently a parent governor at another primary school in Leeds. Furthermore, I am chair of South Asian Arts UK, an Indian Classical Music organisation providing children with the opportunity to access and take part in this music form. These roles provide invaluable experience in my work with Khalsa Science Academy.

I have coached and mentored young children and run a youth group, which explored the challenges they faced in the adult world.

Within my professional work, I am a social scientist, which gives me with a wide range of analytical and research skills to evaluate and monitor how we can achieve the best outcomes for our children. I have worked on regional boards providing expert advice on engagement strategies and climate change on multimillion pound projects, and within local authorities, tendering, procuring and running operational waste management services. I also have experience of policy and strategic development working with regional and national government bodies.

Richard Berry

I am grateful to have been involved with KSA since 2012 as an architect helping to design both the temporary facilities in Chapeltown and the permanent facility at Alwoodley. This has involved working with the trust to help create a facility to deliver the teaching ethos intended to integrate into the surrounding community. It has been an incredible rewarding process and therefore I am proud of my recent appointment as a governor and being offered the opportunity to stay involved and give something back. 

On a personal level I have 4 year old twins who will be starting in a reception class in a school close to where I live in Huddersfield and therefore I am also experiencing the education process as a parent.

Vicki Morris

Vicki graduated from the University of Leeds with a degree in Chemistry in 2011. Whilst studying, she worked as a mentor for Looked After Children and as a relief child support worker and so it seemed like a natural progression when she began working as an unqualified teacher at Royds School in Leeds. Vicki completed a PGCE through the Open University and was promoted to Key Stage Three and Transition Science Coordinator during her NQT period.

In 2015, Vicki joined Trinity Academy Halifax as a Lead Teacher where she relished the opportunity to work with staff to develop pedagogy and support disadvantaged students, both academically and emotionally, to achieve results to the best of their ability.

Vicki joined Leeds City Academy in June 2017 as Assistant Principal for Teaching, Learning and Assessment. She is avidly committed to ensuring the highest quality outcomes for all students in the Academy through supporting and developing teachers’ practice.

Stuart Jolley

I graduated with a Masters degree in Chemistry from the University of York in 2002, following which I secured a graduate trainee role in the finance function at Leeds City Council. I qualified as a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy in early 2006 and held a number of roles post qualification in the central financial management team. In 2009, I moved to the University of York to lead the finance team responsible for the financial management service (including management of the capital programme) for the facilities management activities and a number of other support services. In 2014, I was promoted to the role of Operations Manager for the Social Sciences Faculty, providing leadership to the support functions across the academy and progressing a number of change projects across the University to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the organisation.

In January 2019, I started as Chief Financial Officer for the White Rose Academies Trust. In this role I am the strategic leader for the operational services at the Trust including finance, HR, facilities management and key projects). The White Rose Academies Trust has a £20m turnover and assets of £60m, we employ around 400 staff across the three secondary schools in the Trust.

During my career, I have developed an extensive knowledge of financial management and the efficient use of resources and I have experience of providing support to individual budget holders with relatively small budgets, to reporting at Board level for budgets of up to £100m. As part of my first role at the University, I was part of the senior management team for the Facilities Management Directorate and through this role I developed a good understanding of the requirements of running a large portfolio of buildings. In my latter role at the University I gained significant experience of managing a range of strategic HR issues, experience of setting up new governance structures at the University and developed a range of project management techniques.

Outside of work, I have two primary school aged children. I participate in a range of hobbies including cycling and supporting a local football team. I am a Trustee and Treasurer of a Leeds-based charity providing strategic financial direction to the operations of the organisation.

Sukdev Singh

I am a retired education practitioner who came into full-time teaching in 1985. I had a Civil Engineering qualification when I came to this country but graduated to BSc Hons degree in Electrical Engineering in 1982 from Leeds Polytechnic through part-time studies while I was working in Electronic Service Engineering industry. I was responsible for some apprentices who encouraged me to go into teaching. I took some part-time lecturing in Electronic Engineering at Bradford College to get a feel for the career in teaching and loved it. I was a senior service engineer when I left to go into full-time teaching after nearly 15 years’ service in industry.

I started as a lecturer but very quickly moved to be a Programme Manager and then to be an Assistant Director and finally as Head of Computing, for nearly ten years prior to my retirement. I was responsible for all aspects of my department including financial and academic quality.

I have always been interested in education and completed a number of courses to enable me to support my students such as:

Certificate in Education, Advanced Professional Diploma in Management Development and TDLB Assessor Awards. RSA Counselling Course for educational achievements of students.

I was part of the college quality team that investigated, analysed and recommended to improve the quality of teaching and learning. As the Head of my department it was my responsibility to review the performance of each member of staff and set targets for improvement. During inspection our department was graded as Good as the success rates on most of my courses were good and some outstanding. My team introduced and were accredited to run some new and innovative courses that are still running.

I was elected to be a staff Governor for the college. This helped me to be involved in all other departments of the college and gave me an overall picture of the college. I held this post for three years. When I retired, I was invited to be a Governor for Shipley College. I was responsible for the curriculum and health and safety area of the college. I held this post for three years.

I am also involved in several community projects. I am a Bradford SACRE member representing Sikh faith. I am an Examination Officer at Ramgarhia Panjabi School Bradford. I have always been a keen sport enthusiastic I help organise sports activities for the community and have links with different communities.
